Do you want to join and contribute to the on-going development of a comprehensive multidisciplinary Macmillan Cancer Psychological Support Team? If the answer is yes, then this role may be perfect for you. We are seeking an experienced counsellor who will be responsible for the assessment of psychological need and provision, development and delivery of high quality therapeutic counselling services. As the Macmillan Oncology Counsellor, you would primarily work with patients under the oncology service, as well as their carers and families, providing outpatient and inpatient counseling support. You would sit as part of the wider Macmillan Cancer Psychological Support CaPS Team at St Georges Hospital, who offer specialist psychological support and mental health expertise to those affected by a diagnosis of cancer and its treatment. The team at St Georges Hospital is a multidisciplinary team, comprising of clinical psychology, liaison psychiatry and counselling. In addition to supporting patients and carers, working in the service would involve a significant amount of liaison with medical, nursing and allied health professional colleagues within cancer services. The post-holder would also offer training, support and reflective practice supervision to staff, contribute to service developments and take on trainee counsellors as appropriate. You will need strong interpersonal skills with the ability to command clinical credibility. You must be able to work within the multi-disciplinary team, work to deadlines and demonstrate vision and stamina in supporting this service. You will need to have the confidence to speak up for patients and contribute to the psycho-oncology strategy for the Trust. There will be some opportunity to interface with other counsellors based within the Trust. The Macmillan Cancer Psychological Support CaPS Team actively supports research and there may be opportunities for involvement in teaching and training. To carry out this challenging role you will need to have proven counselling experience within the clinical area of cancer and be able to demonstrate an understanding of the issues affecting patients, families and carers. We will favour candidates with previous experience in cancer but will also consider candidates with experience of working in palliative care or physical healthcare settings and with experience of multidisciplinary working in an acute setting.
