Development Scientist 

Overall Job Purpose:

A vacancy now exists in our TS/MS Process Development Group, to join a small group of scients working on lab and pilot scale process optimisation activities for the downstream processing area in support of the biotechnology product pipeline. The role will predominatly be lab based and will require the successful applicant to both drive the development strategy for key molecules and contribute to process development through hands on experimentation.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Delivering key development goals through hands-on experimentation and demonstration at lab scale
  • Working collaboratively within a small team of development scientists to deliver process and productivity improvements for the Lilly and Elanco biotech products
  • developing work plans, regularly communicating progress to key stake holders and working flexibly to overcome issues and barriers encountered
  • Delivering high quality reports to support proposed process improvements
  • Accountability for budgeting and cost control for development activities
  • Responsible for ensuring that appropriate risk assessments and safe systems of work are in place and adhered to for all purposes development activity
  • Developing close alignment to supporting functions, including Manufacturing Operations, Project/ Process Engineering and Quality Control Labs to ensure that process improvements can effectively be delivered at manufacuring scale

Required Experience:
  • Ability to interact with Scientists, Technicians, Engineering, Analytical Support and other operations support personnel
  • Experience in the operation of lab or pilot scale chromatography and tangential flow filtration equipment
  • Possess a working knowledge of analytical technqiues required for protein purity assessment including HPLC methods
  • Ability to communicate effectively and build strong working relationships at all levels in the organisation
  • Ability to operate in a cGMP environment and produce technical documentation to high standards
Essential Skills:
  • Degree, PhD (or equivalent) in a Scientific, Life Sciences or Engineering discipline, preferably with a biotechnology focus
  • Protein purification, filtration, chromatography, Eliza, protein assays and HPLC
  • Demonstrated capability of working effectively in a team based environment
  • Experience in the use of statistical software to design experimental approcahes and analyse the data generated

Desirable Skills:
  • Previous experience of "Quality by Design" principles
  • Ability to develop a network of contacts across the NW biotech community
  • Some knowledge of Health & Safety expectations for the laboratory environment
